If you've lived in Memphis for a while, you've seen driveways split down the middle, sidewalks heave up near tree roots, and patios settle away from the house. Most of it comes down to the soil and the prep.
Much of the Mid-South sits on expansive clay. It swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries out, and it moves concrete with it. Pouring directly on that clay, without digging out and compacting a proper base, is the most common reason slabs fail early.
Control joints are the second piece. Concrete always cracks as it cures and moves; joints cut at the right spacing tell it where to crack, in a straight line hidden in the joint instead of across the middle of the slab.
Reinforcement, thickness, and drainage finish the job. Driveways that carry vehicles need more thickness and reinforcement than a walkway, and every slab should be sloped so water runs away from the house and off the surface.
We pour driveways, walkways, patios, and slabs in broom finish, exposed aggregate, and stamped concrete across Memphis and North Mississippi. Call (901) 734-9815 for a free estimate.
